"Austrian Champion WBC Wels", what sounds so exciting for people in Wels has been the result of almost a decade of hard, continuous work and professional development. Even though Wels is a city with a rich basketball tradition, WBC was founded only in 2000 - the result of a fusion of two local clubs - and started to compete in the Austrian second division. What started litterally with a few old basketballs, got bigger, better and more professional each year. With a solid financial situation and with Kraftwerk as its loyal sponsor from the very start,
Wels set and achieved bigger goals each season, making it to the Austrian top League by 2003. Wels advanced to the semifinals in its Austrian League debut season and reached the Austrian Cup Final Four in 2005, showing that the team was ready for new challenges. By 2006, Wels had a new TV deal, a better club structure and a signature coach in Raoul Korner.
Wels conquered its first title, the Austrian Cup, and made it to the Austrian League final for the first time, losing only to Allianz Swans Gmunden in a dramatic series. Wels confirmed its status as a title contender reaching the Austrian League semifinals in 2007, losing again to the local rival from Gmunden. The club bounced back from an underachieving 2008 in the best way possible, reaching the Austrian Cup final and winning its first Austrian League title, this time beating the Gmunden swans in a historic final series.
With a new basketball arena in the making, a new era has already started for Wels, as the team tries to reach the Eurocup in what would be an incredible achievement for a still rising club.
